East Durham College Students Continue Hair-Raising Success at AHT Regional Heats 2019

It’s another incredible year of success for East Durham College’s talented hair and beauty team, as they won a clutch of awards at this year’s Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) Regional Heats held at the Federation Brewery in Gateshead.

Competing against 12 other colleges from across the North East, EDC students took part in timed, intense competitions against other hair and beauty contestants.

East Durham College’s talented students stepped up to the plate with a selection of incredible designs. Students Lauren Oliver and Shannon Palmer won first place in the Team Bridal Event, Nicole Brewster won first Place in the Creative Nails Mood Board event and Lucy Entwistle, Eleanor Holdcroft, Jack Angus, Victoria Heaton, Lauren Oliver and Chloe Evans won first place in the highly-competitive Team Event too. Students Siobhan Watson and Rhian Wilkinson also achieved joint second place in the 14-16 year old evening style event, and Jess Filby took second place in Gents Commercial Freestyle designs.

This year marks another year of great success for East Durham College in the competition after an excellent year in 2018 where the college also picked up several first, second and third place awards.

Students who have won at the regionals now get the opportunity to move on to the National Competitions, held later this year in Blackpool.

Angela Johnston, hairdressing lecturer at East Durham College, was thrilled with the results. She said: “Year after year, our incredible students continue to do so well at the AHT Regional Competitions, and this year has been no exception.

“Competition is an integral part of the training our students receive, preparing them for the world-of-work by helping to build their confidence, resilience and self-belief, and it gives them a great chance to unleash their creativity too!

“I’m so happy for them, they’ve shown in class time and time again that they can do incredible things, and for them to gain awards like this is fantastic.”
