East Durham College offers a range of opportunities and support for learners aged from 16-24 with special educational needs & disabilities. At both our Willerby Grove, Peterlee and Houghall, Durham City campuses, we have dedicated departments for SEND learners, focusing on the development of the individual, learning everything from essential life skills such as cooking and money management to maths, English and more.
Foundation Studies
Our Foundation Studies Programmes provide ambitious, purposeful pathways for learners with a range of learning difficulties and / or disabilities. Our carefully constructed curriculum responds to learners’ varying starting points, needs, interests and aspirations, enabling them to build knowledge, confidence, independence and the skills they need to thrive.
With clear routes and appropriate levels of challenge, learners make meaningful progress towards their individual goals and are prepared for successful next steps in adulthood, employment, further study and wider life. Every learner is supported to develop their strengths, overcome barriers and achieve their potential.

Derwent Autism Provision
Derwent Inclusive Pathways is a provision that provides a pathway for learners with Autism to build upon their skills, in preparation for progression onto vocational courses cross college. Established in 2011, Derwent offers a calm, structured and highly supported environment where learners can build confidence, independence and additional skills to allow them to thrive and positively progress.
Our approach is highly individualised. Every programme is designed around our learners, their needs, strengths, personal and academic long-term goals. Every learner is supported to develop their strengths, overcome barriers and achieve their potential.
