HE student finance
Student Finance England provides government-funded support for HE students in England.
There’s lots of financial help available, some of which depends on your household income.
For more information, visit gov.uk/student-finance or The Student Room
HE Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)
DSA supports HE students with disabilities, long-term health conditions, mental health conditions or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. It’s there to remove barriers to learning, so you can take part fully in your studies.
It can cover:
- specialist equipment
- assistive software
- non-medical helper support
- study skills support
- other reasonable adjustments
DSA isn’t means-tested and you won’t need to repay it. Support is based on your individual needs assessment.
If you think you may be eligible for DSA, apply early to make sure support is in place when you start: apply for DSA
Childcare Grant
You may be eligible for help with childcare costs if you:
- are a full-time HE student (120+ credits)
- have children under 15 (or under 17 with special educational needs)
The grant doesn’t need to be repaid and is paid on top of other student finance.

- your child
- a relative earning over £3,796 a year
- getting student finance in the same academic year
- your partner if you’re under 25 (unless married or in a civil partnership)
You won’t be eligible if your household income is over £15,835.98, or if you’re receiving a Postgraduate Loan.
For courses starting on or after 1 August 2026, the dependant must live in the UK (partial-year residents get a reduced amount).
